Formerly pastoral nomads, now village settlers around the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran, Qashqai people are a tribal confederation. THEIR FAMOUS QASHQAI RUG is made of wool in its entirety with ivory warps, natural-color or red wefts and selvedges of different colors. Unlike their Gabbehs, Qashqai weavers use asymmetric knots – Persian knot – in their rug. The “Qashqai medallion” embodying the true nomadic tradition is the predominant design of the rug. The use of vegetable dyes secures the jewel-toned colors dyed in the handspun wool yarn. Red, blue, and ivory constitute the default color scheme of this rug

The older Kashan rugs were made in a limited range of sizes: the most common pieces are over 10 m2 in area. Dozars, made in larger quantities, and mats were almost the only rug sizes woven, although an occasional zaronim or kharak is encountered. Today's production in Kashan falls into several categories

In the late 1530s Kashan's fame as a textile center led to the commissioning of the master-weaver Maqsud by Shah Tahmasp to produce one of the greatest Persian carpets of all time, the Ardebil Carpet. After the end of the Safavid dynasty in 1722, weaving in Kashan dropped to a low ebb, as elsewhere in Persia, and it was not until the late nineteenth century that it revived. However, the standards set by the weavers of Kashan between 1900 and 1950, the balance they achieved between all the elements of structure, color and design - that ideal unity of form and content - have established Kashan in many people's minds as the home of the very best in carpet weaving

Like hand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted pieces are woven by hand, but the process is much simpler and less time-consuming. To make a hand-tufted rug, once the design is ready, the canvas is set up on a frame. The weaver then begins firing the strands of wool - or cotton - through the canvas with a hand-operated tufting gun and thus creating the pile on the other side of the canvas. Next, by gluing a scrim onto the base, the fibers are solidified. Finally a fringe is sewed or sometimes glued on to the rug

Qashqai and Lur weavers are the main producers of these rugs, with the Qashqai being the more prolific of the two. The weaving technique used in making a Kilim rug involves interweaving the strands of warp and weft with warps being covered by wefts, thus yielding a flatweave, i.e., a pileless rug. By winding the weft strands of the same color back at the borderline between blocks of different colors a vertical gap or slit is formed in the weave - hence the term, “slit woven”. Too many vertical slits would degrade the weave, which is why diagonal patterns are usually favored over vertical ones in Kilim rugs to reduce the number of slits

Once traditional village rugs made mostly by women, Kilims are no longer made for personal use or in specific regions.
