Perhaps the most important feature of the Kashan style is the perfect balance of its proportions. The judicious use of ivory and the lighter shades of the subsidiary motifs against dark blue and red contribute to the color-balance of KASHAN RUG; the fine weave permits great delicacy of both drawing and coloring throughout. One of the key factors of Kashan carpets is the discreet richness of the coloring: a large number of warm subsidiary shades is drawn from right across the spectrum without any sense of imbalance or the flashiness that marks richly colored rugs of other origins
Like Isfahan rug, Kashan uses the asymmetrical Persian knot. The vase-of-flowers design, prayer designs - often with pillars supporting the “mihrab”, and garden designs are dominant in Kashans. To preserve the finesse which makes the great traditional red-ground Kashan carpets beautiful, they usually have a KPSI of about 168, which is the highest stitch woven at present in woolen carpets

Like hand-knotted rugs, HAND-TUFTED PIECES ARE WOVEN BY HAND, but the process is much simpler and less time-consuming. To make a hand-tufted rug, once the design is ready, the canvas is set up on a frame. The weaver then begins firing the strands of wool - or cotton - through the canvas with a hand-operated tufting gun and thus creating the pile on the other side of the canvas. Next, by gluing a scrim onto the base, the fibers are solidified. Finally a fringe is sewed or sometimes glued on to the rug

The weaving technique used in making a KILIM RUG involves interweaving the strands of warp and weft with warps being covered by wefts, thus yielding a flatweave, i.e., a pileless rug. By winding the weft strands of the same color back at the borderline between blocks of different colors a vertical gap or slit is formed in the weave - hence the term, “slit woven”. Too many vertical slits would degrade the weave, which is why diagonal patterns are usually favored over vertical ones in Kilim rugs to reduce the number of slits
Once traditional village rugs made mostly by women, Kilims are no longer made for personal use or in specific regions. Modern productions are different in that market demand dictates the designs, colors, materials, and every other property. SOUMAK IS A METHOD OF CREATING HANDMADE RUGS with raised designs. An ancient weaving technique dating back to the 7th century BC, it is still in fashion in parts of Iran and the Caucasus. In Soumak Rug, colored weft yarns of the pattern lie at angles from the horizontal, and by changing the angle of alternate rows V-shape rows of parallel lines are created. At the back of the rug loose ends of the pattern yarns hang free to form a padding; this rugged back makes it part ways with Kilim, which is smooth on both sides. LOOMED RUGS ARE MADE ON A LOOM following a method that is basically a revision of an ancient weaving technique. Instead of tying knots around the foundation fiber as in classic rugs, fiber strands are placed between the loom’s vertical threads - that function as the base. Normally this should yield a flat weave but putting in rods across the loom pulls the fiber into a loop on top of the rug’s base, and thus creates pile. The only thing that holds the pile in place would then be the pressure applied to it on the loom. As easy as it may sound to skip the knotting, this practically sacrifices the precision in executing designs, which is a given in classic rugs. Hence, machines are often used to subsequently print the design on a plain loomed piece In Lori loomed pieces, the pile is reinforced by tying knots, giving the rug added strength and durability.
